Cougar Volleyball is Region XII DIII Runner-Up, Advances to District Championship

PERRYSBURG, Ohio – The Columbus State volleyball team concludes the Region XII DIII Championship as the runner-up behind host Owens Community College on Saturday afternoon.

In the semi-finals, Owens defeated Schoolcraft while the Cougars swept Lorain County to advance to the championship match. Both the Express and Columbus State advance to the NJCAA Mid-Atlantic District Championship in Pinehurst, North Carolina November 1-2.

Both teams in the district championship final will move on to the NJCAA DIII National Championship in Rochester, Minnesota November 14-16.

Inside the Matches

- Region XII DIII Championship (4 teams- 3 OCCAC & 1 MCCAA team)

- Record: 23-8 overall, 13-3 OCCAC

Key Match Statistics

Match 1: Lorain County Community College (25-16, 28-26, 25-14)

-Bobby Diamond led all players in kills with 19 on .289 hitting. Tiziana Russell also tallied double-digit kills with ten successful attacks.

-Audrey Jenkins ran the offense with 34 assists while Diamond and Delaney Short served up two aces apiece.

-Jenkins and Tate Rybarczyk led the defense with 12 kills each. Akea Hunter put up a game-high eight total blocks, including a trio of stuffs.

March 2: Owens Community College (25-23, 17-25, 21-25, 17-25)

-Diamond led the Cougars with 18 kills and six total blocks (3 solo, 3 assisted).

-Russell and Mason Steele combined for 21 kills in the effort while Jenkins dished out 45 helpers.

-Rybarcyzk was a powerhouse in the back, scooping up a game-high 31 digs.

-Diamond and Edan Jones each recorded 12 digs for the defense.

Overall Statistical Leaders

-Rybarczyk leads the nation in total digs with 613 and 6th in digs per set (5.57).

-Diamond is 4th in the nation in total kills (402), 9th in total blocks (83), and 8th in kills per set (3.83).

-Jenkins is 3rd in assists per set with 9.74.

-Hunter is 3rd in the nation in total blocks (91) and 9th in blocks per set (1.17).

-The Cougars remain atop the national leaderboard in total blocks (318). They are also in the top ten in total kills, kills per set, total assists, assists per set, total digs, assisted blocks, total blocks, and blocks per set.

NJCAA Mid-Atlantic A/B District Championship, hosted by Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst, North Carolina. The six-team two day tournament will take place Fri, Nov. 1 – Sat, Nov. 2, 2019.
