COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Columbus State Cougar women's basketball team will face tough competition in its 24-game slate of the 2019-20 season. The schedule features mostly DII teams as well as facing national runner-up Owens.
Last season, the Cougars ended with an 8-17 record overall and reached the Region XII DIII final before falling to Owens. Head Coach Byron Allgood returns for his fourth season at the helm of the program.
A trio of sophomore captains headlines the returners for the 2019-20 season. According to Coach Allgood, "Melia Walder, Madison Miles, and Saraysia Nelson have exhibited strong leadership on and off the court since they arrived freshman year." Also returning are Qiyje' January and Haylee Thomas-Speigle, who brings experience to team and will be in rotation.
Highly talented freshmen, Mickale Bates and Tijae-Smith Turner will be a huge part of the Cougars' offensive attack.
Allgood summarized his season outlook as this: "This team is looking to be this year's surprise in the OCCAC and in the post-season."
The season gets underway on Sat, Nov. 2 when the Cougars host DII Schoolcraft College.
