Columbus State Men's Basketball team Advances to District Championship after Winning Regional Title
CIRCLEVILLE, OH - The Columbus State men's basketball team is headed to the NJCAA District II Championship in Rockford, Illinois after they secured a regional championship victory on Monday. The Cougars will face No. 9 Rock Valley on Sat, Mar. 2 at 3:00 PM CT.
The Cougars entered the NJCAA Region XII DIII tournament as the No. 1 seed, routing No. 4 Owens 115-70 and defeating No. 2 Lorain County 68-60 to clinch the championship.
Columbus South High School grad Jeremiah Green was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after combining for 30 points on 64.2% shooting from the field, 11 rebounds, and two blocks.
-The Cougars maintained the lead over the Commodores for the entire 40 minutes. Columbus State capitalized on their slow first half, outscoring them 36-26. However, after leading by as many as 19 points, Columbus State allowed Lorain County to chip enough away at their deficit until it was a five-point game in the last in the 90 seconds.
-Columbus State outshot Lorain County from the field 51.8% to 29.4%. They also grabbed 46 boards, compared to the Commodores' 36.
-Corey Baker led the team with 16 points on 6-for-6 shooting from the field and 4-7 at the line.
-Charles Aden came off the bench to score 12 points on 6-for-10 shooting.
-Shawn Hawkins matched Green's 100 points while pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds.
-Keshawn Underwood led the game in assists (6) while Green and Hawkins led the Cougars in steals (2).
If the Cougars win the district title they will advance to the NJCAA DIII Championship Tournament, which will be held Mar. 14-16 at Rochester Community College in Rochester, Minnesota.
