Columbus State to Hold 2019-20 Cheer Tryout

COLUMBUS, OH- Columbus State Cougars' cheerleading/ spirit squad will hold a clinic and tryout for the 2019-20 squad on-campus on Friday, September 6-Saturday, September 7 in the Delaware Hall Gym. The tryout is open to both men and women currently enrolled at Columbus State at least three credit hours for the autumn semester. You must bring a valid medical physical (1 year old or less) to the clinic. A form can be found here. Previous cheer, dance, or gymnastics experience required.

The Cougar Spirit Squad is a sideline, coed squad that performs at men's and women's basketball home games, as well as other campus events intended to raise school spirit. You must be able to cheer at all home basketball games. Please review the schedule here and here. (If the game indicates a "vs" or "at" is it away; otherwise it is a home game.)

Registration for the clinic will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6. At the clinic, potential student-athletes will go through motion technique, jumps, spiriting, and overall game day presentation. Everyone will be taught a cheer to be evaluated by a panel of judges at tryouts. Additionally, everyone trying out will be required to create their own basketball sideline chant. Chants can be offense, defense, or spirit chants and are done a total of three times through.

On Saturday, Sept. 7, tryouts will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. in the Delaware Hall gym. There will be three stations set up with a panel of judges. Station 1-clinic taught cheer; Station 2 - personal basketball chant; Station 3 - jumps, tumbling (not required), and other relevant skills.

For both the clinic and tryout, please wear the following: Navy or gray sport style shorts and plain white t-shirt/tank top. NO JEANS! Athletes should wear their hair in a high ponytail with a bow, ribbon, or scrunchie and should look neat and presentable. All potential cheerleaders should wear cheerleading shoes or comfortable tennis shoes.
