Thomas Shaw in his second season as a member of the Columbus State cross country team. A graduate of Hilliard Davidson High School, he helped the Cougars to an 8th place national finish last season with a time of 31:59.9 8k.
Why did you decide to come to Columbus State? I came for financial reasons, but I didn't get excited until I found out about the cross country team.
When/how did you start running? I started running in 8th grade, after a friend of mine suggested joining the team. Best decision I've ever made.
What do you enjoy most about being on the cross country team? The sense of camaraderie between every runner- we're in competition with each other but even if we're from other schools we still want everyone in the race to do their absolute best.
Why did you choose your major? I've always loved writing and reading, it just seemed natural that I go into a field I love. One day I want to teach a high school English class, maybe I'll even wind up coaching a team of my own.
Can you give us an idea of what a day in the life of a Columbus State cross country runner looks like? During class we always chug as much water as possible, on hot days it's really easy to get dehydrated. Once we've gotten our academics done with, it's time to throw on our running shoes and get our mileage in for the day, which can range from an easy run to a grueling 10+ mile workout depending on the day.
Give us a fun fact about yourself. If you ever hear a Columbus State runner talking about "Dad", they're referring to me. I'm the one on the team that babysits everyone else, so the nickname stuck.
