COLUMBUS, Ohio –The Columbus State (18-0, 7-0 OCCAC) endured a five set battle to defeat No. 9 NJCAA DIII ranked Lorain County Community College on Friday. While the Cougars dropped the first two sets to the Commodores 22-25 and 14-25, they gutted it out to win the next three sets 25-14, 25-15, and 15-13.
Sophomores Stephanie Ruffing (Powell/ Olentangy HS) and Jenni Payne (Mansfield/Lexington HS) led the effort with 27 kills & 10 digs and 14 kills & 21 digs respectively. Freshman Julia Wynn (Columbus Grove/Columbus Grove HS) chipped in 12 kills, two digs, and five blocks. Sophomore Paige Brady (Nevada/Wynford HS) ran the defensive attack with 31 total digs while freshman Ellie Cain (Covington/Lehman Catholic) tallied 68 assists and 17 digs.
The Cougars return to the home court this week, hosting three conference matches. On Wednesday the Cougars take on the Edison Chargers at 6:00 p.m. Later this week, Columbus State will welcome the Lakeland Lakers on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and the Cuyahoga Challengers on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
