Columbus State Women’s Basketball Preview

COLUMBUS, Ohio – After finishing as the regional champions and the district runner-up last season, this year's Cougar squad is focused in on a NJCAA national tournament appearance. According to the preseason polls, Columbus State is ranked sixth in the conference.

Head coach Byron Allgood has set some high standards and expectations for the 2018-19 season. "We have some high standards and expectations set for this season. Without a doubt, I feel like we have the players to live up to what we want to accomplish."

The 2018-19 squad features a young team chock full of talent.

Saraysia Nelson, Tezzaeria Christian and Qiyje January are three explosive guards ready to make an immediate impact this year.

Shiann Bassett, Malia Williams, Kayli Houmard and Bailee Davis are poised to be a threat from distance.

"Our team will focus on getting after it on the defensive end, but runs in transition. We have plenty of players to do that. Overall I am very excited about the potential of this team," said Allgood.

Haylee Thomas-Speigle, Madison Miles, and Annika Wilson headline the talented group of wing defenders.

Solid post play is expected from Melia Walder, McKenna Cummins, Whitney Staggs, Lyrik Easley and Stashi McDonald.

Columbus State faces a tough schedule this season both in conference and non-conference play. Out of 25 games, 14 games are with DII opponents, 9 with DIII opponents and the remaining 2 are with branch/club teams.

The Cougars open their season on Wed, Nov. 7, hosting Edison State in a conference game. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
